OLM 531 -Leading Culturally & Generationally Diverse Populations
This course was so important to me in my role with the WCU Black Alumni Chapter as well as my daily interactions as at work. As President, I need to know and understand how to better understand and work with alumni from every generation. Many people only think to focus activities on the group of people in which they share interests. The organization in which I hold a leadership role must be able to relate and work with all generations but must ensure we plan events that meet the needs and interests of all alumni. The textbook used in the course really helped me understand the expectations and values of the Baby Boomers, Generation X and Millennials. It also helped me understand the importance of relationship building and meeting people where they are. As an employee with an office with a multi-generational workforce, we often expect people to do what we were taught. I quickly learned that we can't assume anything and that everyone has a different learning style, different perceptions of office etiquette and work habits. I am not currently in a management position; however, the observations I have made are monumental to my leadership development.
This knowledge also plays a crucial role when I am working with students in the mentoring program. To be an effective mentor, I have shifted focus on title and focused more on relationship building and ensuring there are open lines of communication. I think this course was crucial because I used to find myself expecting others to see things my way and conform to my way but this course has taught me to understand that diversity extends beyond just race and sex, but it also includes working with a multi-generational workforce.
