Demonstrate competency in reading and conducting research in organizations.

Outcome I

OLM 503 - Applied Research Methods

This course was one of the hardest classes for me because I had no idea how to conduct research.  I struggled with APA and how to use the library's resources.  I had been out of school for over twenty-five years and I was completely lost.  Dr. Vicky was hard but she pushed us and she taught us well. This by far has been one of the most beneficial classes ever. I have used what I learned in this class in every other course in this program.  I wish I had a pre-research class before this one to introduce me to this style of writing.  I am so thankful that the she helped me develop my topic back in the early part of the program and gave me the advice she did.  The research conducted in this paper was so beneficial to my capstone project.  As I reflect and compare the  quality of my work from the beginning of the program until now, I made a lot of improvements.  I am not proficient in APA yet; however, I have a better understanding and am writing much better than in 2017.

This particular assigned was new to me as well.  I really didn't have an understanding of an Ethnography but once I conducted the research, I was amazed.  I considered using the observation technique with my capstone but it didn't really fit.  Due to my role in the mentoring program, if I just came to observe did not perform my normal duties, people would look at me strangely.  This type of research relies highly on the researcher's ability to pay attention to detail and his/her memory.  I think this is an excellent research technique if you are observing cultural practices or doing an assessment for an organization.  Although I struggled in the class, I was exposed to new things and the experience taught me so much.  I often wonder when I go into a public area or even at work, is there someone observing and if so, what type of research are they doing and what are result findings.  I wonder if anyone even realized I was observing business operations while I was there that day.
